New Delhi: Within months after his decision to step down as India’s T20I skipper and was sacked from a leadership role in ODIs, Virat Kohli has now step down from the captaincy of the Test side as well. Kohli shocked the cricketing fraternity and millions of fans by announcing his resignation from the role of India’s Test captaincy.

BCCI president and former India skipper Sourav Ganguly on Sunday opened up on Virat Kohli’s decision to step down as India’s Test captain. Ganguly took to Twitter to congratulate Kohli for his great stint as India’s captain in all three formats while calling him a ‘great player’ and hailing the team’s progress and rise under his leadership. Ganguly further clarified that this decision of stepping down from Test captaincy was a ‘personal one’ and that the BCCI respects it.

“Under Virats leadership Indian cricket has made rapid strides in all formats of the game his decision is a personal one and bcci respects it immensely. He will be an important member to take this team to newer heights in the future.A great player.well done ..@BCCI @imVkohli,” Ganguly said in his tweet.

The shocking announcement came a day after India’s 1-2 Test series defeat to South Africa in Cape Town. Kohli, who first captained India at the Adelaide Test in 2014 against Australia, was appointed to the full-time role after M.S. Dhoni announced his retirement from the format following the drawn third Test against Australia in Melbourne in December 2014. The 33-year-old ended his tenure with fourth-most wins as Test captain 40 wins and 11 draws in 68 matches.

It’s been seven years of hard work, toil, and relentless perseverance everyday to take the team in the right direction. I’ve done the job with absolute honesty and left nothing out there. Everything has to come to a halt at some stage and for me as Test Captain of India, it’s now. There have been many ups and also some downs along the journey, but never has there been a lack of effort or lack of belief,” Kohli posted on social media on Saturday.
