Kolkata: On Sunday, Spain defeated England in the Women’s World Cup championship game by a score of 1-0. Olga Carmona’s strong first-half shot from the left wing past England custodian Mary Earps was the reason for this victory. Left back Carmona has scored for Spain in back-to-back World Cup matches. The Spanish squad leads the World Cup in goals with 18, which is a tournament high.

Shortly after the hour mark, Spain was given a penalty for a handball by midfielder Keira Walsh. Jennifer Hermoso was awarded a penalty kick, but custodian Mary Earps saved it by diving to her left. With striker Lauren James added to the lineup, England coach Sarina Wiegman made a number of adjustments, but they were unable to tie the game as Spain clung on to win their first major championship.

The men of Spain, who won the men’s trophy from South Africa in 2010, have congratulated the ladies on their success. Millie Bright, the captain of England, acknowledged after the match that Olga Carmona’s early goal for Spain contributed wonderfully to La Roja’s high possession strategy.

“Against a team like this where you let them get that sort of momentum, it’s actually really difficult,” Bright told reporters after the game. “They love to possess the ball.”

Spain had the edge in possession, 47%-37%, and had more attempts on goal, 14-7, and shots on target, 5-3. The captain said she was proud of her teammates for bringing England to the nation’s first Women’s World Cup final.

“A lot of emotion, but really proud of the team, to come this far to play in the World Cup final, not many players do that,” she said. “So yeah, really proud.”

“Champions of the world! Champions of the world,” they wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, adding, “An entire country has vibrated with you girls. You have changed forever the history of Spanish women’s football.”
