Maranello: Italian Formula One team Ferrari confirmed on Thursday that Carlos Sainz has extended his contract with the Italian Formula One team by two years, until the end of 2024, ahead of the fourth Grand Prix of the season in Imola. After two seasons with McLaren, the 27-year-old Spaniard joined Ferrari in 2021.

“I have always said that there is no better Formula 1 team to race for and after over a year with them, I can confirm that putting on this race suit and representing this team is unique and incomparable,” Sainz said.

Following his retirement last time out in Australia, Ferrari has altered Carlos Sainz’s engine for this weekend’s Emilia Romagna Grand Prix as a precaution. It’s Sainz’s second engine of the season, and it’s within his allotment, so he won’t be penalized for Ferrari’s first home race of the season in Imola.

“In his time so far with the team, he has proved to have the talent we expected from him, delivering impressive results and making the most of all opportunities,” said Mattia Binotto, Ferrari team principal.

Sainz debuted in Formula One with Toro Rosso in 2015 and has since competed in 143 races, winning eight podiums.

Last season, he came in sixth in the drivers’ standings, ahead of teammate Charles Leclerc.

However, after three races, Leclerc has taken a commanding lead, with 71 points, ahead of Mercedes’ George Russell (37 points) and Sainz (33).
