Kolkata: Kerala Blasters midfielder Givson Singh has stated that he is ambitious and very much hungry to represent his country on a senior level. The player who made his India U-19 debut against Russia U-19 in an international friendly said he aims to give all he has to offer on the field hoping the selection board calls him up for the national camp someday.

“Although it was in the U-19 category, it was an honour to play for my country. This achievement has made me hungrier to represent my country on a senior level. Now all I have to do is showcase all that I’ve got and give the selection board a valid reason to give me a call to the national camp,” Givson Singh told Sportslight Media in an exclusive interaction.

Coming from Moirang — a small town in Manipur — Givson Singh started his football from the local coaches at his village until he was scouted by Minerva Punjab. After spending some time with the former I-League champions Minerva Punjab and Indian Arrows (AIFF Developmental side), Givson Singh joined Kerala Blasters in 2020.

Kerala Blasters always had eyes for the young emerging talents, scouting them and giving them opportunities to prove themselves in the bigger stages. The attacking midfielder had a nice time with the Indian Arrows scoring twice along with two assists in the 16 matches he played. He also spent three years in the AIFF Elite Academy.

Grassroots programme has played a very crucial role in Givson Singh’s career. “Initially it wasn’t so great. But as time has passed, I personally have seen a good growth of young stars of the future through different grassroots programs and academies. Surely, the future looks bright for Indian football,” said the youngster.

The last season for Kerala Blasters hasn’t been good as they finished 10th in the ISL table. He also felt the absence of the crowd in the stands played a big role due to COVID-19. The 2020-21 ISL season was played behind closed doors in Goa.

“The season was not an ideal season due to the injuries we faced. But had the Yellow Army been there, the outcome would have been quite different in a positive manner. Pandemic has no doubt been an obstacle, but working out from home and keeping a strict watch over my eating habits has kept me fit and healthy,” he added.

Fresh into the new season, Givson Singh is very much looking forward to the upcoming season. Asked about his partnership on the field and who compliments him the best, Givson Singh said, “If I’m being honest, it’s not my partnership with one single player, but a partnership with the whole team.

“When the defence clears or regains possession to when the offense scores or from super saves from the goalie to the playmaking from the midfield, it’s a partnership with 10 other guys you can put your trust in and their trust in you. That’s how it’s supposed to be,” he concluded.
