Goa: He is just 20 years of age with so much potential, a future star in making. Born in Manipurin a poor family, Nawaz started his football career at the age of 10. His father works as a driver and had a tough upbringing. However, his exclusion from the India U-17 FIFA World Cup squad in 2017 changed his career.

“I started playing football in 2010. Since 2013 I was with the national team. But sadly I couldn’t play the U-17 World Cup. That was my turning point and I took that as my motivation, it was like a challenge for me after being dropped,” Nawaz told Sportslight Media in an exclusive interaction. “FC Goa gave me the chance and they backed and motivated me.”

Called as the wall of FC Goa, Nawaz has been touted Gaur’s No.1 ‘keeper and is one among the line to be making it to the India team. He made his FC Goa debut in 2018 in Indian Super League season five as a first-team ‘keeper against NorthEast United.

“It was the best moment for me in FC Goa colours. Even though I did a mistake during the match against NorthEast United but I did learn from my mistakes. And yes it’s a pleasure to play for FC Goa any day,” he recalled.

Former Goa coach Sergio Lobera trusted a lot on Nawaz and the team did score concede many throughout the last season, as the playing style was quite different than other teams. Nawaz added, “FC Goa has been playing a nice style of football, and it will be a great moment to represent India in AFC Champions League.”

Asked about his excitement in playing at the global stage, Nawaz said, “Yes it’s a big opportunity for me to represent India at an international level, and if I get a chance it will be good for me to showcase my talent, we as a team will give our best and I will give my best.”

The Gaurs line-up has changed a lot from last season as a number of players and the coach has left to other destinations. Nawaz said despite the severe changes, things will be similar as they have been working hard throughout. “New Season, New Players but our playing style will be similar just like other seasons. We have been working hard, both tactically and technically, so you will see a very organized Goa side this season,” he added.

He also said there are several sides that are to look out for and also named his top four. “Obviously ATKMB, Bengaluru FC and yes Mumbai City FC with too many key players and even Kerala Blasters have a good side this season. I think we can add ourselves too at the top four,” he said.
