Copenhagen: Angry Croatian fans were accused of throwing water bottles and cups at the Spanish players as the 2018 World Cup runners-up missed out on a Euro 2020 quarterfinals spot at the Parken Arena on Tuesday. Croatia lost 3-5 on the night.

The Croatians were visibly enraged after referee Cuneyt Cakir did not give attention to Croatian players’ protests after Cesar Azpilicueta’s clearance struck Koke’s hand inside the box. Reacting to the referee’s decision to not award them a deserving penalty, Inter Milan star Marcelo Brozovic protested against Cakir’s verdict in the 73rd minute.

To this, the 44-year-old Turkish referee showed a yellow card to Brozovic which further angered him and the fans at the stands more. They started pelting the Spaniards with water bottles and cups. Azpilicueta even caught one cup that was hurled at him.

Even though a lot of people felt bad for Croatia and their fans, they could not stop themselves from criticizing the disgraceful act by Croatian spectators littering the pitch. The social media was blown with people protesting as they started feeling less sorry for the Croatian fans.

“State of Croatia fans throwing bottles. If that were England fans the media wouldn’t stop going on about it,” a user tweeted. Another commented: “Good job we’ll not see them throwing bottles in any more games.”

A third remark said, “Croatia fans are literally scum, throwing bottles and cups onto the pitch. No respect at all.” Another tweet read, “Croatia fans throwing s*** on the pitch is just ghetto.”
