Rome: A first-half goal from Mateo Pessina was enough to give Italy a convincing 1-0 win over Wales in Group A and sail into the Euro 2020 knockouts on Sunday. However, Wales too advanced in the knockouts owing to their better goal difference.

On the other hand, Switzerland defeated Turkey 3-1 on the day to finish third in Group A.  Pessina’s goal meant Italy will play the runners-up from Group C in the next round, with Wales facing the team that comes second in Group B.

Italy extended their unbeaten run to 30 games — 25 wins and five draws — a feat last achieved under two-time World Cup-winning coach Vittorio Pozzo between 1935 and 1939. It was also an 11th consecutive win with a clean sheet for Italy.

Elsewhere at Baku, Haris Seferovic gave Switzerland the lead on six minutes. Xherdan Shaqiri made it 2-0 for Swiss on 26 minutes to go into the break with the same scoreline. Turkey pulled one on 62nd minute to reduce the margin but Shaqiri dashed all their hopes of making it to the next round with a 68th minute strike.
