Wembley: Raheem Sterling scored the only goal as England cruised past Croatia in the Euro 2020 at the Wembley Stadium on Sunday. This was also England’s first-ever opening match win in the history of the competition.

Gareth Southgate’s men dominated the match from the onset with rare threats from the opposition. Luka Modric did invade the English defence but was successfully parried away by Jordan Pickford. The deadlock was finally broken by Sterling in the 57th minute.

Meanwhile, Jude Bellingham, who came as a substitute in place of Harry Kane, also became the youngest player to play at the Euros at just 17. Elsewhere, the Netherlands produced a dramatic late come back to edge past Ukraine 3-2 in Amsterdam.

Georginio Wijnaldum’s goal on 52 minutes put the Dutch in the lead before Wout Weghorst made it 2-0 just six minutes later. Andriy Yarmolenko brought Ukraine back in the game with a stunning curler on 75 minutes which is the best goal so far in the competition.

Roman Yaremchuk put Ukraine on level terms four minutes later. However, it was Denzel Dumfries who did the star turn with an 85th-minute goal to win it for the Orange.

On the other hand, Stefan Lainer, Marko Arnautovic and Michael Gregoritsch each scored a goal in Austria’s 3-1 win over North Macedonia. Goran Pandev scored for North Macedonia in their first appearance in this competition.
