Durand Cup 2022 kicks off with gala ceremony night

Kolkata: The 131st edition of Asia’s oldest football tournament, the Durand Cup, began on Tuesday with great grandeur and ceremony at the Vivekananda Yuva Bharati Krirangan Kolkata.

Nearly 13,000 spectators gathered to the Durand Cup opening day to watch the match between Mohammedan Sporting and the defending champions FC Goa.

The kick-off done by Mamata Banerjee, Chief-Minister, West Bengal many other dignitaries were present. Sports Minister Aroop Biswas, and others were also present at the gala opening ceremony of Durand Cup 2022.

The tournament will be held across five different states with final being held at Kolkata. 11 Indian Super League (ISL) teams will compete alongside 20 other teams for the first time in the tournament’s history.

The hour-long opening ceremony witnessed theme song launch by Papon and Rewben Mashangwa. A cultural festival was held to mark the 131st kick-off this legendary tournament.
