Durand Cup 2022: Chennaiyin FC beat TRAU FC to keep qualifying hopes alive

Imphal: Chennaiyin FC trained by Thomas Brdaric came out a comfortable 4-1 win over 10-man Tiddim Road Athletic Union (TRAU) FC, at the Khuman Lampak Stadium.  This resulted in a mouthwatering final group clash against local side Neroca FC for Chennaiyin FC, on September 05, 2022. The result of which will determine the second spot from Group C. Defending Indian Super League Champions Hyderabad FC have already qualified from the group.

The opener came in the very first minute as Crotian striker Petar Slskovic found a long ball to make no mistake in the 16th second. Chennaiyin FC’s attack continued as TRAU keeper Jedidi Haokip mihandled Sliskovic and Arumughan. Ghanaian Kwame Karikari made no fuss to give Chennaiyin FC a 2-0 lead in the 20th minute from the spot kick.

Minutes before the end of first-half, referee Arumughan pronounced marching orders for TRAU FC forward Salam Johnson Singh. Following this TRAU FC was being completely demolished throughout the game by a determined and hungry Chernnaiyin FC, who got first win in the 131st Durand Cup tournament.

Livewire Baoringdao Bodo in one of his bulldozing runs unleashed a shot; however it ballooned off the keeper to Sajid Dhot’s arm. TRAU skipper Komron Tursunov converted the game’s second penalty at the stroke of half[1]time.

During the second half, Chennaiyin FC ramped any comeback hopes from TRAU FC. Rahim Ali in the 48th minute unleashed a powerful shot but it was well saved by Haokip. The TRAU goalie that had a lot to do today

Iranian Vafa got his goal in the 51st with an offmark floating from Thapa’s  corner. He headed Chennaiyin FC’s third. They persisted though, and in the 54th, Edwin Vanspaul’s thunderbolt, after defeating Dinesh, shook the crossbar and netted back.
