Durand Cup 2021: FC Bengaluru United edge past Mohammedan SC

Kolkata: Although both the teams had made it to the knock out stages of the 130th edition of the tournament, Mohammedan SC falter 0-2 against FC Bengaluru United in the final group stage encounter on Tuesday , September 14 at Kalyani Stadium.

With both the teams equally motivated to defend their unbeaten streak, the game was stuck in a hard to break deadlock with the heavy rain adding to the woes of breaking the level.

The much needed breakthrough came in the 64th minute from Bengaluru’s Thokchom James Singh rising above his marker to give Bengaluru a much needed lead. With only one goal difference, as the end approached the encounter went on intensifying. All hopes of recovery for the home side were discarded when they conceded a spot kick , five minutes into the stoppage time. Bengaluru’s Luka Majcen comfortably put it past the custodian to secure the top spot in the group for the Bengaluru side as the Black Panthers go as runners .

On the same day, elsewhere at Mohun Bagan Athletic Ground, the encounter between Central Reserved Police Forces (CRPF) and Indian Air Force had to be called off due to unplayable conditions of the ground owning to incessant heavy rainfall and water logging. Both the regimental sides were awarded a point each.
