Kolkata : Delhi Capitals and Aussie legendary skipper part ways after 7 years. The decision also came ahead of IPL 2025 mega auction.
Ponting was appointed as head coach of Delhi Capitals in 2018 IPL (then Delhi Daredevils).
Though they finished last in 2018, Ponting and Delhi saw success in 2019,2020,2021 IPL when Delhi qualified for playoffs after 2014.
However, Delhi saw a dip in form from 2022-2024 , failing to qualify for playoffs.
“As you move on as our head coach, we’re finding it incredibly hard to put this down in words,” DC said in a post on social media. “The four things you told us about in every huddle – care, commitment, attitude and effort – they sum up our seven summers together. Seven summers of you being hands-on, but also hands-off, so that we could become better. As athletes, yes, but more importantly, as human beings. Seven summers of you reaching every training session first, and leaving last. Seven summers of you sprinting out of the dugout during strategic timeouts, and biting your nails off until there were none left.
“Seven summers of your dressing room speeches – the speeches, Oh! (Separate post for that loading) Seven summers of your hugs, shoulder pats and fist pumps for us all – newcomer, superstar… and everyone in-between. Thank you for everything, Coach! Like, you often close out, ‘Let’s leave this here mate, grab a beer, get back to work tomorrow, yeah?'”
The Aussie World Cup winning skipper is also credited with grooming youngsters like Risabh Pant and Prithvi Shaw, & bringing a new ray of hope in the team.
Now multiple sources suggest that Indian legendary skipper Sourav Ganguly who joined the side in IPL 2019 & was the Team’s director in IPL 2024 , will take over as head coach of the team from next season.
“Sourav Ganguly will take over as head coach (of Delhi Capitals) is what I heard as of now,” said sources from Delhi Capitals camp.
The Delhi Capitals management will reportedly conduct a meeting later in upcoming days to discuss the future roadways regarding head coach, player retentions, IPL 2025 auctions and so on.
