Indian Grand Master Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu stunned World Champion Magnus Carlsen again in the space of three months on Friday at the Chessable Masters online rapid chess tournament.

The 16-year-old teen star took advantage of Carlsen’s one-move error to keep his prospects of reaching the knockout stage alive.

Following Praggnanandhaa’s 40th move, the game appeared to be going for a tedious draw, but in a startling turn of events, Carlsen misplayed his knight on his previous move while Praggnanandhaa checked with an attack on his back piece.

Praggnanandhaa (12 points) beat Gawain Jones (England) in the seventh round after drawing the sixth with compatriot P. Harikrishna, who finished 11th. Vidit Gujrathi (5) finished in 14th place.

He had defeated the Norwegian in the Airthings Masters earlier this year in February. In the eighth round of the Airthings Masters, an online fast chess competition, young Indian Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa startled World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen. Early on Monday, Praggnanandhaa won a Tarrasch variant game with black pieces in 39 moves, ending Carlsen’s three-game winning streak.

“I think it’s about just going to bed,” Praggnanandhaa had famously said after beating Carlsen when asked how he would celebrate the victory.
