London: Chelsea are set to sign Édouard Mendy from Rennes, according to sources. The Senegal goalkeeper who was under the radar for a very long time is about to move to London, as Chelsea agrees to a 22m pound deal.

Frank Lampard had been looking for options to put pressure on Kepa Arrizabalaga. When the 71.6m pounds goalkeeper underperformed, Chelsea had to sign another goalkeeper, to increase competition. Kepa failed to create impact last season, after conceding on a number of occasions, due to his poor judgment.

A howler from Kepa allowed Brighton to score against them in the previous match, which took away their chance to maintain a clean sheet. Chelsea failed to find a new club for Kepa during the transfer window. In spite of targeting Jan Oblak, they had to settle for a much affordable option. Having already spent over 200m pounds, they had to lower their expenses.

Mendy was also recommended by Petr Cech, the club’s technical and performance advisor. The goalkeeper had a very good season with Rennes after helping them to qualify for Champions League.

The signing of this player means the urge for the other two goalkeepers Kepa and Willy Caballero to perform better would increase. Lampard would be looking forward to having a much better season following up on the big signing made by them this transfer window.
