Canada qualify for FIFA World Cup after 36 years

Kolkata: Canada National Football team is set to make their first appearance in the FIFA World Cup 2022 since 1986, bridging a gap of 36 years. Thrashing Jamaica 4-0 in their penultimate CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers, Canada qualified for the ultimate showdown of the nation tournament.

First half goals from Cyle Karin, Tajon Buchanan along with a goal from Junior Hoillet and a howler from Adrian Marriappa saw Canada finally end their drought of almost three and a half decades. With the win against Jamaica Canada now sit at the the top of the CONCACAF table with 28 points, six clear of USA and Mexico.

Canada’s last World Cup experience came in 1986 FIFA World Cup that took place in Mexico. Canada was rendered out of the tournament post the round robin stages where the side failed to win, infact score in any of the three games. It was the same year, that Diego Maradona had lifted the WC trophy Argentina. However, with the top three teams from CONCACAF directly qualifying to the tournament, Canada is set to make a rejuvenated appearances.
