BCCI to announce two new IPL teams on October 25

New Delhi: Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) treasurer Arun Dhumal on Monday denies all the reports of Rohit Sharma taking over as limited-overs captain.

Dhumal put an end to all the speculations, saying that Virat Kohli will continue as the captain of the Indian cricket team across all three formats and that Hitman will be playing as Kohli’s deputy in the white-ball format.

“This is all rubbish. Nothing as such is happening. This is all what you guys (media) are talking about. BCCI has not met or discussed anything on this issue (split captaincy). Virat will remain as the captain of all formats,” Dhumal told IANS.

Earlier in the day, reports emerged that Kohli is all set to step down from limited-overs captaincy post the T20 World Cup 2021 in UAE this year and will be replaced by Rohit. The report also stated that Kohli wants to concentrate on his batting, and he has had discussions with Rohit Sharma and the team management regarding this, and they have taken the call to herald Rohit’s captaincy in the limited-overs formats. “No such meeting took place,” Dhumal further stated.

Kohli had taken over as India’s full-time captain across all three formats of the game from MS Dhoni in 2017 and has since made the Men in Blue one of the most dominant teams across formats.

Kohli has already become India’s most successful captain in Tests with 38 wins in 65 matches. Kohli has captained India in 45 T20 Internationals (T20Is) and 95 ODIs, leading the team to 27 wins in the shortest format and 65 in ODIs.

However, he is yet to prove his credentials in limited-overs cricket. So far, the 32-year-old has led India in two ICC events in white-ball cricket but the Men in Blue returned without a trophy despite playing extremely well.

The Indian cricket team will now be seen in action on October 24 next when Virat Kohli’s men lock horns with the Pakistan cricket team in a blockbuster match of ICC T20 World Cup 2021.
