BCCI releases schedule for IPL 2022; CSK to take on KKR in opening match

New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Sunday (March 6) announced the schedule for the 15th edition of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 which will be held in Mumbai and Pune.

Sponsored by the Tata group, the 2022 edition of IPL will get underway on March 26 with a marquee clash between Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders, at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

The BCCI had earlier announced that there will be 70 league matches and 4 playoffs in the 10-team season as two new teams with Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titans joining the bandwagon. The matches will be played across 4 Venus in Mumbai and Pune. The final of the tournament will be played on May 29, but details related to the timing and venue are not yet shared by the cricketing body.

All the teams are virtually divided into two groups, Group A and  Group B.
Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals, and Lucknow Super Giants are in Group A. Chennai Super Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Punjab Kings, and Gujarat Titans are in Group B.

As per the new format of the IPL, each team will play twice against the other four teams in their respective groups and against the team who are placed in the same row in the other group. CSK will play twice against Mumbai Indians and the remaining four teams in Group B, while KKR will play twice against Sunrisers Hyderabad and the remaining four teams in Group A.

“The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the schedule for TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 which will be held in Mumbai and Pune. A total number of 70 league matches and 4 Playoff games will be played in the duration of 65 days. The 15th season will start on 26th March at the Wankhede stadium with a blockbuster clash between Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders,” BCCI stated in the press release.

Five-time champions Mumbai Indians will begin their campaign on March 27, which will be the first of 12 doubleheaders in the league stage of IPL 2022.

“There will be 12 doubleheaders in total with the first match starting at 3:30 PM IST. All evening matches will start at 7:30 PM IST. In all, 20 matches each will be held at Wankhede Stadium and DY Patil Stadium, 15 matches each at Brabourne and MCA International stadium, Pune.” The BCCI added.

“The schedule for the four play-off matches, that will be played after the league stage concludes, will be shared later,” the BCCI said.
Punjab Kings will face Royal Challengers Bangalore in the 2nd match on March 27.

While new sides Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants will begin their campaigns going against each other on Monday, March 28.
SunRisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals will be the last two teams to kick off their campaigns on March 29.
