New Delhi: The much-awaited T20 World Cup will not be happening in India as scheduled because of high COVID-19 risks in the country. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) was kept as a standby to host the event and as it looks the tournament moves to middle-east just like the remainder of the 2021 Indian Premier League.

The BCCI has also decided to inform the International Cricket Council (ICC) about their decision. The tournament will be held in October-November, reportedly between October 17 and November 14, with some of the initial games also to be played in Oman.

“We had a meeting of office-bearers today (on Monday). We decided that it will be impossible to host the T20 World Cup amidst the Covid-19 pandemic. There are talks of a third wave. So, it would be highly risky. We will soon inform the ICC about our decision,” BCCI vice-president Rajiv Shukla was quoted as saying to IANS.

Although the UAE be hosting the event, BCCI will remain as hosts of the competition which ICC has already clarified. Meanwhile, there has been no official confirmations from the ICC yet, it is understood that the apex body will do so after getting a letter from BCCI.
