Kolkata : Pakistan star Batter Babar Azam has resigned as Pakistan Cricket Team’s White Ball captain.
Babar was all format captain of Pakistan team, and had led his side to ICC T20 WC 2021 Semi Final, including 1st ICC Event win against India & ICC T20 WC 2022 Final.
He stepped down from captaincy after Pakistan’s poor show in ICC ODI World Cup 2023 , where they faced group stage exit, only recording 4 wins in 9 Matches, also losing to Afghanistan for 1st time in ICC Event.
Pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi was appointed as the New skipper, however, was soon replaced before ICC T20 WC 2024 & Babar was eventually brought back to captaincy.
Matters got worse in the T20 WC as Pakistan not only lost to lower rank USA & arch rivals India but also failed to qualify to Super 8.
On top of that, Babar’s performance with the Bat too is a flop show in recent couple of years. Recently, they lost Test Series in their Home soil against Bangladesh.
Therefore, to relieve off the workload and focus on his Batting performance and spend quality time with family, Babar took this decision.
He wrote in his social media addressing his fans, “I’m sharing some news with you today. I have decided to resign as captain of the Pakistan men’s cricket team, effective as of my notification to the PCB and Team Management last month.
It’s been an honour to lead this team, but it’s time for me to step down and focus on my playing role.
Captaincy has been a rewarding experience, but it’s added a significant workload. I want to prioritize my performance, enjoy my batting, and spend quality time with my family, which brings me joy.
By stepping down, I will gain clarity moving forward and focus more energy on my game and personal growth. I’m grateful for your unwavering support and belief in me. Your enthusiasm has meant the world to me.
I’m proud of what we’ve achieved together and excited to continue contributing to the team as a player.
Thank you for your love and support.”
Pakistan’s next assignment is home Test against England starting from October 7 and Babar will look to turn back the clock and find his sublime touch thereby, helping his team to get back on track.
