Kolkata: Indian Super League (ISL) side ATK Mohun Bagan has reportedly sealed a deal with Finland international Joni Kauko. A central midfielder by trait, the 30-year-old is currently with the Finnish national side at the ongoing Euro 2020.
Kauko plays for the Danish 1st Division club Esbjerg FB and also featured in Finland’s historic 1-0 victory over Denmark in the first group game as a substitute in the second half. According to sources, ATK Mohun Bagan were looking for a marquee signing ahead of the upcoming ISL season and reportedly had talks with the Kauko’s agent amidst the ongoing Euro 2020.
Kauko started his senior at the tender age of 17 for Inter Turku before playing for the likes of FSV Frankfurt in Germany and Randers FC of Denmark. He represented the national side in the 2018-19 UEFA Nations League as well.

The two-time ISL champions after narrowly missing out on lifting the trophy last season were desperate for fresh changes in the squad. Especially after the departure of Javi Hernández, they wanted to have new options in the middle as well as strengthening their foreign contingent.
To possibly have someone at 30 — considered as a prime time in a footballer’s career — while also representing his nation in the Euro 2020 as well as playing in a top-division European club would certainly be a great move.
