Barcelona: Lionel Messi received his seventh Pichichi award on Monday (December 21), for finishing at the top of the scoring charts in La Liga in the 2019-20 season. He is the only player in the history of La Liga who has won this award seven times.

The record of most Pichichi award was last held by Telmo Zarra, who played with Athletic Club during the 1940s and 50s and won it six times. The Argentine talisman, scored 25 times in La Liga last season, bettered by none but closely followed by Karim Benzema who scored four goals less than him.

He won the first Pichichi during the 2009-10 season. Thereafter he went on to win it for a record number of times in 2011-12, 2012-13, 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19. Cristiano Ronaldo, his fiercest rival won it three times while playing for Real Madrid.

The 33-year-old Barcelona forward is only the second player in La Liga history to win four Pichichis in a row after Hugo Sanchez. This record will also be broken if he manages to score the most number of goals this season and win the fifth Pichichi in a row and create history.
