Melbourne: India stand-in captain Ajinkya Rahane who scored his 12th century in the Boxing-Day Test, became the first recipient of the prestigious Mullagh Medal award after India beat Australia by 8 wickets in the second Test match in Melbourne.

Rahane was named the Player of the Match, for all his efforts. He scored a stunning hundred (112) in the first innings which ensured India a total of 326 runs in the first innings and 131-run lead after bowling Australia out for 195.

The Medal is a tribute to honour Johnny Mullagh, the captain of Australia’s first sporting team to tour internationally. He was the first cricketer who led the famous 1868 Aborginal tour to the United Kingdom. Cricket Australia had earlier announced that the Man of the match for the Boxing Day Test will be awarded Mullagh Medal.  BCCI has shared the news about the same on social media.  The proud recipient and the inaugural winner of the Mullagh Medal – #TeamIndia Captain Ajinkya Rahane, tweeted BCCI.

India have levelled the four-match series 1-1 after winning the second Test match in Melbourne by 8 wickets. Ajinkya Rahane’s captaincy, combined with Jasprit Bumrah’s brilliant bowling helped India win the Test in grand style. This was Ajinkya Rahane’s third win as captain and it was India’s second consecutive win at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, having won in 2018.
