Riyadh: A 6-0 defeat in the hands of Al Shabab in the fifth game of their AFC Champions League Group B, rendered out all the hopes for Des Buckingham’s Mumbai City FC to qualify for the knockout stages of the tournament.

Hattan Bahebri’s hat-trick helped confirm Al Shabab their victory while Abdullah Al-Jouei and Carlos scored a goal each. A howler from Mumbai City FC skipper Mourtada Fall added to the misery.

Mumbai City FC currently sit at the bottom of the Group B table with only four points from five games. Having a 2-1 win against the Iraqi Air Force, Mumbai City FC became the first Indian club to register a win the AFC Champions League while star defender Rahul Bheke became arguably the first Indian to score in AFC Champions League. However, the win and another goalless draw against Al Zazira was less than needed for the Qualification.

Whereas unbeaten in five and with 13 points to their name, Al Shabab march into the next round, joining city rivals Al Hilal and Qatar’s Al Duhail SC in the Round of 16.
They conclude their group stage on Tuesday against Al Jazira, while Mumbai City have been officially eliminated and will look to improve their place on the table when they face Air Force Club.
