Dubai: Defending champions Sri Lanka clinched their place in the final against India as they produced a solid fightback to seal a thrilling 4-wicket victory over Pakistan in a low-scoring semifinal of the T20 Asia Cup 2026 at the Dubai International Stadium in Dubai on Friday, September 11.
In the semifinal clash, Chamari Athapaththu-led Sri Lanka’s disciplined bowling attack restricted Pakistan to a modest total of 130/5. Despite Fatima Sana’s all-round brilliance — an unbeaten 47 off 36 balls and 4/38 with the ball — her efforts ultimately went in vain as Sri Lanka’s composed batting display, led by Harshita Samarawickrama (36 off 31) and Kavisha Dilhari (33 off 33), staged a determined fightback and held their nerve in the chase, as Sri Lanka completed the victory at 134/6 in 18.4 overs, winning by 4 wickets with 8 balls to spare. The semifinal began with Sri Lanka winning the toss and electing to bowl first, as Pakistan endured a difficult start with the bat. While chasing 131, Sri Lanka suffered a major top-order collapse as Sana struck twice in consecutive deliveries in the second over of the chase, dismissing Chamari Athapaththu (5 off 6) and Sanjana Kavindi for a duck. Her double strike gave Pakistan a flying start and put them firmly in control of the chase, leaving Sri Lanka under early pressure. Under immense pressure, Harshita Samarawickrama and Kavisha Dilhari took charge of the recovery. The pair steadied the innings and brought their team firmly back into the contest, continuing to rotate the strike and find much-needed boundaries as they stitched together a crucial 67-run partnership off 59 balls for the fifth wicket. The momentum gradually shifted towards Sri Lanka as the pair looked well-set at the crease and began to put the Pakistani bowlers under mounting pressure. However, Sana returned in the 17th over and dismissed both set batters in the same over, breaking the crucial partnership and giving Pakistan a much-needed breakthrough at a crucial stage of the chase. She first removed Harshita Samarawickrama for a composed 36 off 31 balls, including two boundaries, before dismissing Kavisha Dilhari for a valuable 33 off 33 balls, with four boundaries, to keep Pakistan’s hopes alive. With Sana completing her four-wicket haul, Sri Lanka were left at 109/6, still needing 22 runs from 18 balls. However, Nilakshi de Silva (18 off 10) and Kaushani Nuthyangana (10 off 4) held their nerve under pressure and secured the chase without further loss. Nilakshi then struck the winning boundary as Sri Lanka completed the chase at 134/6 in 18.4 overs, with 8 balls to spare, sealing the victory and confirming their place in the final.
Fatima Sana was named Player of the Match for her all-round brilliance, scoring an unbeaten 47 off 36 balls and claiming 4/38. With the loss, Pakistan’s Asia Cup 2026 campaign came to an end. With the victory, Sri Lanka will face India in the final, in a repeat of the 2024 final. Both teams remain unbeaten in the tournament, setting the stage for a thrilling final clash.
