Elaine Thompson-Herah leads Jamaican sweep in women’s 100m

Tokyo: In one of the greatest shows at the ongoing Tokyo Olympics, Elaine Thompson-Herah broke the Olympics record by 0.01s to retain her women’s 100m title on Saturday. The 29-year-old led an all-Jamaican podium clocking 10.61s at the Olympic Stadium.

Thompson-Herah, who improved Florence Griffith-Joyner’s record 33 years ago at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, finished ahead of her rivals Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce (10.74s) and Rio Olympic 400m medallist Shericka Jackson (10.76s). Ivory Coast’s multiple world medallist Marie-Josee Ta Lou finished fourth in 10.91s.

Thompson-Herah produced an impressive return at the world stage who was struggling with a series of injuries since winning her sprint double in Rio five years ago.

Poland take mixed team 4x400m gold

Poland made their way into the history books claiming the debut mixed team 4x400m Olympic gold in Tokyo. The Polish quartet of Karol Zalewski, Natalia Kaczmarek, Justyna Swiety-Ersetic and Duszynski clocked 3:09.87s to claim the title ahead of the Dominican Republic and the United States.

The silver went to the Dominican Republic’s Lidio Andres Feliz, Marileidy Paulino, Anabel Medina Ventura and Alexander Oganda clocking 3.10:21s while the US quartet of Trevor Stewart, Kendall Ellis, Kaylin Whitney and Vernon Norwood in 3.10:22s.

It was also Poland’s first Olympic gold in an athletics relay since the 1964 Summer Games when the Polish women’s 4x400m relay took the yellow metal, also in Tokyo.

Sweden finish 1-2 in men’s discus throw final

In another final showdown for the day, Sweden’s Daniel Stahl (68.90s) and Simon Pettersson (67.39s) took gold and silver respectively. Austria’s Lukas Weisshaidinger settled for bronze in 67.07s.
