Tokyo: Switzerland brought home third Olympic tennis gold after Belinda Bencic defeated unseeded Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 in a nail-biting women’s singles finale in two hours and 30 minutes on Saturday.

The last time Switzerland won gold at the Olympics stage was in at 1992 Barcelona Games when Marc Rosset won and in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka teamed up to win the men’s doubles title.

To add more to that, Federer clinched silver in the 2012 London Games, while Timea Bacsinszky and Martina Hingis captured silver in women’s doubles at Rio 2016. This was also Bencic’s first international win since Moscow 2019.

The bronze went to World No.6 Ukrainian Elina Svitolina, who rallied from 1-4 down in the final set to defeat Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina, 1-6, 7-6(5), 6-4. This was also Ukraine’s first-ever Olympic medal in tennis.

Meanwhile, World No.1 Novak Djokovic, who was defeated by Germany’s Alexander Zverev in the semifinals, once again went down to Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta 4-6, 7-6 (8-6), 3-6 in the men’s singles bronze medal play-off match.
