Manchester: Manchester United completely dismantled Southampton’s side 9-0 at Old Trafford on Wednesday (February 3) and levelled points with Manchester City at the top of the Premier League.

The visitors played almost the entire game with 10 men after Southampton’s Alexandre Jankewitz, who made his first Premier League start, was shown a straight red card for a studs-up challenge on Scott McTominay in just 82 seconds into the match.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka scored and put United in front shortly past the quarter-hour mark. He raced on to a Luke Shaw cross and locked it home for an early lead on 18 minutes. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s boys doubled the lead soon after when Mason Greenwood assisted Marcus Rashford, who redirected it past Saints keeper Alex McCarthy to make it 2-0 on 25 minutes.

United’s third goal came from an own goal after Jan Bednarek inadvertently poked a whipped-in Rashford cross into his own net on 34 minutes. They continued their domination as Edinson Cavani added another before half-time on 39 minutes to send United with a 4-0 lead in the break.

Substitute Anthony Martial scored from close range on 69 minutes and McTominay added United’s sixth goal of the night on 71 minutes. Bednarek’s night just got worse, when the defender tripped Martial in the area and earned himself a send-off and gifted United a spot-kick that Bruno Fernandes converted on 87 minutes.

Martial completed his brace on 90 minutes and Daniel James scored in second-half stoppage time to 9-0 over their opponent. This is the largest Premier League win in the history for United, which put them on 44 points. Ralph Hasenhuttl’s Southampton remain in 11th place in the standings with 29 points from 21 games.
