Guadalajara: Anett Kontaveit defeated third-seeded Karolina Pliskova 6-4, 6-0 to advance to the semi-finals of the season-ending WTA Finals on Friday.

The eighth-seeded Estonian won her 12th straight WTA match, ensuring her place in the top two of her group in the round-robin phase. Kontaveit, who has victories in Moscow and Cluj-Napoca, defeated French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova in the tournament opener.

She dominated Pliskova in only 57 minutes, capturing 24 of her 29 first-service points and the last eight games to secure her first career victory against the Czech in four encounters.

Later in the day, she and Krejcikova faced up against Garbine Muguruza in the group stage.

Due to the coronavirus epidemic, the major tournament was relocated to Guadalajara this year from its customary location in Shenzhen, China.

Due to ongoing pandemic travel restrictions, Australia’s world number one Ashleigh Barty will not defend her title.
