Istanbul: Nitu Ghanghas (48kg), the 2017 Youth World Champion, maintained her excellent form and advanced to the quarter-finals of the IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in Istanbul on Saturday, defeating Spain’s Lopez Del Arbol by unanimous decision.

Nitu, who won the Strandja Memorial event in Sofia earlier this year, controlled the proceedings from the start. The Bhiwani fighter was full of fire and had superb movement and quickness to strike accurate blows.

Nitu increased the ante in the next two rounds, continuing her aggressive strategy without allowing her opponent a chance, and winning the match 5-0.

In the quarter-finals on Monday, she will face Kazakhstan’s Alua Balkibekova.

On the other hand, Manisha Moun (57kg) upset former Worlds bronze medallist Bulgarian Svetlana Staneva 4-1 in a keenly-contested fight.

Manisha defeated Svetlana after a tough battle. Manisha moved effectively in the opening round, landing her counter blows in response to the Bulgarian southpaw’s rapid combinations.

As Manisha became more aggressive and participated in a punching match, she received a warning and the round was awarded to Svetlana by a score of 4-1. Now, Manisha would meet experienced Mongolian boxer Namuun Monkhor in the next round.
