WBBL 2024 : 2 times champion Adelaide Strikers sign Smriti Mandhana

Kolkata : 2 times Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) champion Adelaide Strikers have signed the Indian Women’s team iconic opener Smriti Mandhana in the Pre draft.

The left hander is set to return to the league after 2021. She has played for Brisbane Heat, Hobart Hurricanes, Melbourne Renegades, Sydney Thunder previously, & will join her 4th WBBL team.

In 38 matches in the WBBL, the left-handed batter has notched 784 runs at an average of 24.50 and a strike-rate of 130.01. In 2021 playing for Thunder, she notched up 114 not out off 64 balls against Melbourne Renegades which is the joint second-highest individual score in the tournament’s history.

Adelaide won the WBBL 2022, 2023, the 2 seasons that Smriti opted out for managing workload.

Earlier in WPL 2024, she led Royal Challengers Bengaluru to their maiden title win under coach Luke Williams. Luke is also the coach of Adelaide, and Smriti will unite with him in the tournament.

“I always look forward to playing in Australia, and I’m excited about the opportunity to contribute to a team with a history of success like the Strikers,” Mandhana said. “I’m thrilled to continue working with Luke. Our previous experiences together have been so rewarding, and I’m looking forward to building on that.”

Strikers eyed for Smriti last year, but she opted out eventually to manage workload.

Speaking about Mandhana, Luke said, “Smriti is an exceptional talent, and we are thrilled to welcome her to the Strikers”.

“Her technical skill, experience and strategic insights are a tremendous asset for us. I know firsthand the dedication and energy she brings to the team and on the field. Her expertise and leadership will be invaluable as we drive for success in the upcoming season”, added the RCB and Adelaide coach.

The addition of Smriti in Adelaide’s top order will boost the team’s Batting line up. Adelaide would fight for clinch hattrick of titles win.
