Vinesh Phogat creates history, become first Indian woman to reach a wrestling final at Olympics

Paris : Indian iconic wrestler Vinesh Phogat dominated Cuban wrestler Yusneylis Guzman Lopez 5-0 in Women’s 50 Kg Freestyle Semi Final & qualified into the final, becoming 1st Indian Woman Wrestler to do so. She also confirmed Gold/Silver Medal for India.

Vinesh Phogat right from her arrival in Paris Olympics 2024 arena today has seen a dream day. She 1st defeated Japanese Modern Day great, World Champion , Yui Susaki 3-2, ending her 82 matches winning streak of 5 years, in the opening round. Then she defeated Ukrainian Wrestler Oksana Livach 7-5 in the Quarter Finals. Again, in semi final she dominated Yusneylis Guzman Lopez from Cuba 5-0 to qualify into the final.

In the semi final match, both wrestlers began defensively. Officials awarded Vinesh a point for Yusneylis’s passivity and ended the first period with 1-0 lead in favour of the Indian.

Both wrestlers continued to be on guard at the start of the second period. However, Vinesh, in danger of conceding a point on passivity, executed two takedowns to lead 5-0. Vinesh held on to her lead in the final 30 seconds to make it the final of the Paris 2024 Olympics.

On August 8, Vinesh will face Tokyo Olympics 2020 Bronze Medalist, USA’s Sarah Hildebrandt in the Gold Medal Match.
