Vaibhav Sooryavanshi becomes fastest Indian to reach 1000 IPL runs

Kolkata : Teenage sensation and current orange cap holder in IPL 2026 – Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has yet again shattered records with blistering knock of 96 (47) against Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 2.

Sooryavanshi became the fastest Indian to score 1000 IPL runs. He reached the feat in 23 matches, taking just two more matches than Shaun Marsh, who currently holds the record for the fewest number of matches taken to score 1000 IPL runs. The young Rajasthan Royals opener is joint second on the list with West Indian Lendl Simmons, who also took the same number of matches to achieve the feat.

The left-handed batter also became the fastest player to reach 1,000 IPL runs in terms of balls faced, getting to the landmark in just 440 deliveries during the ongoing IPL 2026 season.In doing so, he shattered the previous record held by former Kolkata Knight Riders all-rounder Andre Russell, who had needed 545 balls to reach the four-figure mark.

Sooryavanshi has smashed a staggering over 133 boundaries, a combined tally of fours and sixes, in IPL 2026.

The previous record belonged to Gujarat Titans star Jos Buttler, who struck 128 boundaries during his memorable 2022 campaign. Sooryavanshi has now moved past that mark, highlighting the extent of his dominance this season.

Sooryavanshi reached the 500 powerplay runs milestone with the first 10 runs of his innings and, remarkably, 452 of those powerplay runs came in boundaries, including 47 fours and 44 sixes.

He is also the first batter to score 500 powerplay runs in a single season of any T20 tournament.

He had broken David Warner’s previous IPL record of 467 powerplay runs, set for Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2016, during his blistering 97 off 29 balls against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL 2026 Eliminator.

Sooryavanshi continues to lead the IPL 2026 Orange Cap race, having amassed 776 runs in 16 matches this season.

In previous match against Sunrisers Hyderabad, which was IPL 2026 eliminator, he shattered long standing record of Chris Gayle by smashing 65 sixes, the most by any batter in a T20 tournament. Gayle had the record in his name since 2012 season, where he smashed 59 sixes in 456 Balls. However, Sooryavanshi broke his record in just 266 Balls.

In both matches, Sooryavanshi narrowly missed his tons , scoring 97 and 96 respectively.
