Tokyo Olympics: Mary Kom up against Miguelina Hernandez in opener; Amit Panghal gets 1st-round bye

World champion boxer Mary Kom heads to Italy before Tokyo Games

Tokyo: Six-time world champion Mary Kom (51kg) will open her Tokyo Olympics gold medal quest against Miguelina Hernandez of the Dominican Republic in the Round of 32 on July 25, the draws were announced on Thursday. The Manipuri could see Colombian third seed Lorena Victoria Valencia next.

In the men’s 52kg category, India’s Amit Panghal got a first-round bye and will meet either Colombia’s Rivas Martinez or Botswana’s Ro Mahommed in the Round of 16. Lovlina Borgohain (69kg) too got a bye in the first round and will meet Germany’s Nadine Apetz next.

2021 Asian Champion gold medallist, Pooja Rani (75kg) will be up against Algeria’s Ichrak Chaib on July 28 in the Round of 16. Simranjit Kaur (60kg), who also got a first-round bye, will face either Thai Sudaporn Seesondee or Ecuador’s Maria Jose Espinoza in the next round.

Among the men, Japanese Quincy Mensah awaits Vikas Krishan (69kg) in the Round of 32 on July 24 while Manish( Kaushik (63kg) faces Luke McCormack of Great Britain in a Round of 32 clash the day after.

Satish Kumar (91+kg) got a bye in the first round and will be up against Jamaica’s Ricardo Brown in the Round of 16 on July 29 and Ashish Kumar will meet Erbieke Tuoheta from China in the first round.

Satish, who is a former Asian Games bronze medallist is the first super heavyweight boxer to qualify for the Olympics, and if he wins against Brown, the Armyman could land up in front of top seed Bakhodir Jalolov of Uzbekistan. Jalolov is the reigning world champion besides being a three-time Asian champion.
