New Delhi: Special Olympics Bharat launched Developmental Sports for the young athletes to enable their transition to higher sport participation by learning sport-specific skills and tactics. Herbalife Nutrition, the premier global nutrition company, has extended its support to the tune of USD 150,000 for two years from April 2020, to extend the programming across the length and breadth of the country.

Developmental Sports activities can provide an age-appropriate introduction to sports for children with and without intellectual disabilities, aged 6-12 years old. Sport participation helps children develop physically, mentally, and socially and contributes to the development of long-term healthy lifestyles. Special Olympics Young Athletes provides children with a general introduction to the fundamental gross motor movements that will help them become more successful in sport.

While children can participate in Young Athletes through age seven, as children get older, they are often ready for more sport-specific coaching and instruction August and September 2020 saw a rollout of two phases of three webinars each, that trained coaches in basketball, cricket and football in the Developmental Sports format.

The initiative is being supported by Herbalife Nutrition that stands steadfast in its commitment to the Inclusion of Persons with Intellectual Disabilities through sports, regardless of the testing times of COVID-19.

Herbalife, under the stirring leadership of Ajay Khanna, has demonstrated an unwavering determination to develop sports for our Athletes and over the years, has shown an understanding and compassion that touches the heart of each and every one of us.
