Kolkata : Indian and Mumbai team pacer Shardul Thakur has been hospitalized at the end of Day 2 of Irani Cup 2024 clash against Rest of India with high fever.
Thakur battled mild fever from Wednesday but his conditions worsened after Day 2 and had to be rushed to the hospital soon after the stumps.
As per reports, Thakur was discharged from the hospital on Thursday morning, roughly around the time Rest of India started its innings on the third day of the game.
Thakur, running a mild fever, was saved for the No. 10 batting slot on Wednesday but had to walk out to the middle and join Sarfaraz Khan.
Thakur scored important 36 runs off 59 deliveries and helped Sarfaraz cross a historic double hundred and Mumbai thereby scored 500+ total.
During the innings, in hot and humid conditions in Lucknow, Thakur’s condition worsened and he had to be hospitalised soon after stumps.
Therefore, Thakur was expected to not take field today on Day 3 . It’s also reported that he’s better than before, and returned to the field some minutes back with a bandage in left hand.
As per a report in The Indian Express, Shardul had fever on Day 1 of the match but wanted to continue playing and do everything possible for the team.
“He was not feeling well for the entire day and was running on high fever, which was the main reason he came out to bat late. He was feeling weak and he slept in the dressing room after taking medicine. But he wanted to bat despite feeling low. We have got his blood test done for malaria and dengue. We are waiting for the results. Till then, he will spend the night in hospital,” a source told The Indian Express.
The Irani Cup fixture is the first game for him after he underwent foot surgery in London in June this year.
He had suffered an injury during a Ranji Trophy match season but kept playing despite the pain as Mumbai lifted their 42nd Ranji title by beating Vidarbha in the final.
Thakur’s main focus would be the Australia series as the 32-year-old looks to make a comeback to the senior side. India will play five-Tests Down Under starting from November 22 in Perth.
Thakur was part of the team that defeated Australia on their own turf during the famous 2021 Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
