SAFF U-18 Women’s Championship: India emerge victorious despite Bangladesh loss

Jamshedpur: The Indian U-18 Women’s Football Team emerged as the Champions of the SAFF U-18 Women’s Championship on March 25 hosted by AIFF in India. Although, the Blue Tigresses registered a sole loss by 1-0 at the hands of Bangladesh, India edged their cross border rivals on goal differences to become victorious.

 

Winning their first three encounters against Nepal, Bangladesh and and again Nepal by a score line of 7-0, 1-0 and 5-1 while losing their ultimate game to Bangladesh by 0-1, the Blue Tigresses gathered nine points with a goal difference of 11 goals in their favour. While, their cross border rivals had the identical number of points, the Blue Tigresses edged out owning to their insane scoring spree.

Forward Lynda Kom made it as the top scorer of the tournament with five goals accredited to be the most valuable player of the SAFF U-18 Women’s Championship while a top-notch performance from Skipper Hemam Shilky Devi remained a constant throughout the tournament. Shilky has already made her senior team debut after being selected in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2022. Coach Thomas Dennerby is set to include her in the squad list traveling to Jordan to play the Tri-nation friendly tournament alongside Egypt.
