Goa: ATK Mohun Bagan continued their good form as they started the New Year with a win beating NorthEast United FC 2-0 on Sunday, at the Jawaharlal Stadium in Fatorda. Fijian Roy Krishna scored one while Benjamin Lambot conceded an own goal. This win helped ATKMB to go to the top of the table.

This match was important for both sides as the season is taking its toll and every team is trying to make a mark in the league. For NorthEast it was to get back to winning ways after they went winless in their last four outings and for ATKMB it was to retain the top spot from Mumbai City FC.

Antonio Lopez Habas made two changes in his side by bringing in SK Sahil and Prabir Das in the first XI from the Chennaiyin FC match. The first half was a stalemate as neither of the team could create a clear goal-scoring opportunity. The match opened up from the second half.

In the 51st minute, Krishna opened the scoring for ATKMB from an Edu Garcia corner — a clinical poachers finish. Six minutes later, ATKMB got their second after Lambot scored in his own net.

After that, the Mariners took a whole charge on the match with their ultra-defensive formation and the Highlanders failed to create any opportunity out of it.
