Rohit and Kohli have been preparing diligently after a seven-month hiatus from international cricket. Kohli impressed with a century against Pakistan and top-scored in the semi-final against Australia, while Rohit made a match-winning contribution in the final against New Zealand. Both are now focused exclusively on limited-overs cricket following their retirement from Tests and T20Is, sparking questions about their longevity ahead of the 2027 50-over World Cup. Shreyas Iyer finds his place as Vice Captain of ODI team, with Gill captain.
“It’s practically impossible to have three different captains for three different formats – at some stage we have to start thinking about the 2027”, Ajit Agarkar said.
“Virat Kohli & Rohit Sharma are still Leaders in the Team”, Agarkar added.
Hardik Pandya, recovering from a quadriceps injury, and Rishabh Pant, recovering from a foot fracture, are unavailable, while Test skipper Shubman Gill, who has recently completed the Asia Cup and is midway through a two-Test series, may be rested from either ODIs or T20Is.
For T20I squad, almost same team of Asia Cup winning team is selected. Jasprit Bumrah is also added, led by Surya Kumar Yadav and Gill remains vice captain there. Nitish Reddy has replaced injured Hardik Pandya.
