Kolkata: It was the end of January 2020. A video of India cricket team on it’s tour to New Zealand was uploaded by BCCI.tv. The bus was approaching Hamilton, for the third T20I against New Zealand and Yuzvendra Chahal was seen talking to the team members, asking about their experience.
At the end of the video, he moved to the rear of the bus and pointed to an empty seat. He said, “Yeh woh seat hai jahan ek legend baithate the. Mahi bhai. Abhi bhi yaha koi nahi baithata. Hum unhe bohot miss karte hai (This is the seat that used to be occupied a legend. MS Dhoni. No one sits here now. We miss him a lot)”
No one seats on Dhoni’s seat. Because he is irreplaceable. And now it’s official, the former captain’s seat will always remain empty. Meanwhile, wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik hopes that the jersey no.7 will also retire along with him. It will be best to honour the legend.
Karthik tweeted, “This is the last photo taken after our semis at the World Cup. lots of great memories through this journey. I hope the @bcci retire the #7 jersey in white-ball cricket. Good luck with your second innings in life, I’m sure you’ll have a lot of surprises for us there too.”

Former India women’s team captain Shantha Rangaswamy has also agreed that it would be the best way to tribute him. I am glad he has retired when people are asking why and why not. His contribution both as player and captain has been immense. Considering that, retiring the jersey will be a fitting tribute to him,” she told PTI.
“He surely deserves it,” Indian women’s ODI team Mithali Raj took to her Twitter to state Dhoni has immortalised the jersey no.7. “The man who immortalised jersey no.7, whose sharp mind and a cool head earned him the tag of #CaptionCool, the man who fulfilled billion Indian dreams by two World Cup trophies and who bid adieu in his inimitable style. Congratulations #MSDhoni on an outstanding career,” she wrote.
