Getafe: Real Madrid started their year with a 1-0 defeat against Getafe on Sunday( January 2), this was their first defeat since October 2021 in La Liga. FC Barcelona on the other hand, won the first match of the year against Mallorca 1-0 on Monday ( January 3).
The hosts took a lead on nine minutes when Enes Unal took advantage of the error from Real defender Eder Militao and fired it past Thibaut Courtois. Luka Modric’s shot hit the crossbar midway through the first half.
Real manager Carlo Ancelotti brought in Eden Hazard and Marcelo at half-time in search of an equalizer, but Real Madrid continued to struggle. Vinicius Junior missed the match due to Covid 19.
Luuk de Jong scored the only goal as Barcelona somehow managed to edge past Mallorca. De Jong headed in a cross from Oscar Mingueza on the stroke of half-time as Barca moved to fifth place in the league table.
Jaume Costa almost scored an equalizer but his effort was brilliantly saved by Marc-Andre ter Stegen, to give Barcelona a vital win to be just one point away from the top 4 places in the league table.
Angel Correa scored a brace which helped Atletico Madrid to secure a 2-0 win over Rayo Vallecano on Saturday. With the victory, Atleti overtook Rayo and is now fourth in the league table with 32 points from 19 matches.
