Chandigarh: Punjab School Education and PWD Minister Vijay Inder Singla announced on Sunday that the state government led by Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh renamed several schools in the state after Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist hockey players.

According to Singla, the CM gave the approval to renaming schools after 11 Punjabi hockey players who were on the podium in Tokyo. The Government Senior Secondary School (GSSS) Mithapur, Jalandhar will now be known as Olympian Manpreet Singh Government Senior Secondary School Mithapur. Manpreet Singh is the Indian captain.

Singla added that Government Primary School Mithapur, Jalandhar has been renamed Olympian Mandeep Singh Varun Kumar Government Primary School Mithapur, Jalandhar. Because, as a striker and a defender, both players performed admirably during the Olympics.

GSSS Attari, Amritsar will now be known as Olympian Shamsher Singh Government Senior Secondary School Attari, who played a significant role as a successful midfielder during the tournament, according to him.

Government Middle School, Basic girls Faridkot has been named as Olympian Rupinderpal Singh Government Middle School, Basic girls Faridkot, according to the Cabinet Minister, as Rupinderpal scored four goals in the Tokyo Olympics.

The Government Middle School Khusropur, Jalandhar has been named after Hardik Singh while the Government Primary School Khalaihara, Amritsar is after Gurjant Singh. The GSSS Butala, Amritsar has been named after Dilpreet Singh.

Apart from that, Singla stated that the roads leading to the residence, village, or area of the respective medal winners will be named after them. He went on to say that it would encourage students and other young people to excel in their favorite sports.

The Indian men’s hockey team created history when they beat Germany 5-4 to win bronze ending their 41-year medal drought at the Olympics. The last time India won an Olympic medal in hockey was at the 1980 Moscow Olympics.
