Kolkata : U Mumba’s skipper and defender Sunil Kumar has touched new heights with historic captaincy record after guiding his team to 43-29 win against Puneri Paltan in Maharashtra Derby at Balewadi Sports Complex, Pune in Pro Kabaddi (PKL) 2024-25.
Sunil, with 74th win as captain in PKL, surpassed Iranian defender Fazel Atrachali’s record of 73 wins with the victory against Puneri Paltan, thereby, becoming most successful captain in the League’s history.
He also completed his 1st High-5 this season, playing pivotal role in the win.
Not only did he captain superbly for all franchises including U Mumba this year but also serves as great defender.
In PKL 9, he also guided Jaipur Pink Panthers to title triumph.
After the win, Sunil said, “I’m very happy to become the best captain of PKL. I learnt captaincy from Anup Kumar, Ajay Thakur when I played with them. So this achievement is thanks to both of them.”
Sunil, known for his sharp tactics and calm mind, was on 65 victories as captain at start of PKL 11 , while Fazel was on 71.Atrachali is leading Bengal Warriors this season, and he has only managed 3 wins in 14 matches.
On the other side, Kumar led U Mumba to their 9th victory of the tournament, thereby breaking Atrachali’s record.
U Mumba are currently 3rd in the points table, with 7 more league games remaining.
