Pep said that it was a collective decision from him, the players in the backroom staff. ”He will be good, as he always has done since I met him,” said Pep. “Sometimes I have captains, it doesn’t matter with the armband, being the first captain, he is always a guy who leads in the bad moments.”

“We decided in the locker room – the players, the backroom staff – we decided that Fernandinho is the captain and I am more than delighted with that’,” Pep explained.

The Brazilian midfielder joined City from Shakhtar Donetsk back in 2013 making over 300 appearances for the team while establishing himself as one of the best defensive midfielders of the game. However, he played a handfull of games as a centre-back due to the injury crisis in the squad. City will start their campaign on Monday (September 21) against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
