Nishad Kumar wins high jump silver at Tokyo Paralympics

Tokyo: Indian athlete, Nishad Kumar, a high jumper, won silver in the men’s T47 high jump event at the Tokyo Paralympics 2020 on Sunday. As the event turned out to be a good one for the Indian para-athlete, he made a jump of 2.06m and also set an Asian record.

Roderick Townsend and Dallas Wise of the United States won gold and bronze, respectively. Townsend went 2.15 meters, while Wise managed 2.06 meters.


Kumar and Wise both completed on the same mark, however, Nishad did so on his first attempt while Wise needed two. As a result, Nishad was awarded a silver. Rampal Chahar of India came in fifth place with a leap of 1.94m.

Previously paddler Bhavinaben Patel became only the second Indian woman to earn a medal at the Paralympics after a historic silver in the women’s singles table tennis class 4 final, losing 0-3 to China’s Ying Zhou.

Bhavina is the first Indian table tennis player to win a Paralympic medal, and the second female athlete to do so after PCI President Deepa Malik. Deepa was a silver medalist in the women’s shot put in Rio 2016.
