Murali Vijay opts out of Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy owing to personal reasons

Chennai: Veteran Tamil Nadu batsman Murali Vijay has pulled out of the upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, which is all set to begin from January 10. The opening batsman has pulled out of the tournament owing to personal reasons. Pacer K Vignesh was not available for selection as he tested positive for coronavirus and was replaced in the probables list by RS Jaganath Sinivas.

“L Suryapprakash and Jaganath Sinivas have been included in place of M Vijay (expressed his unavailability due to personal reasons) and K Vignesh in the Tamil Nadu probables for the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Tournament,” a Tamil Nadu Cricket Association press release stated on Saturday (December 19).

The 36-year-old India opener Vijay last seen for Chennai Super Kings(CSK) in a few matches in the recent Indian Premier League 2020. Tamil Nadu squad is headlined by players like Dinesh Karthik, Vijay Shankar, Sandeep Warrier, and M Ashwin.

As per a report in ESPNCricinfo, Tamil Nadu will play three practice matches among themselves on December 19, 20, and 21 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai before the final squad is picked on December 21.

Tamil Nadu are in Elite Group B in the tournament along with Assam, Bengal, Hyderabad, Jharkhand, and Odisha. The upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, is all set to be played across six states under-bio secure bubble. The tournament will  begin from January 10 and the final of the tournament will be played on January 31.
