Kolkata : In a surprise turn of events, Pakistan Cricket Team’s Chief Selector and former legendary Batter Mohammad Yousuf has resigned from his post citing “personal reasons” on September 29.
Yousuf took over as Selector from March 2024 , and hasn’t seen best of times in Pakistan Cricket since then.
Despite making out of box selections like bringing in Mohammad Amir, Imad Wasim for ICC T20 World Cup 2024 , Pakistan faced group stage exit being defeated by the likes of debutant USA and arch rivals India.
Following the T20 World Cup , despite many of the selection panel being revamped, Pakistan faced shocking whitewash defeat against Bangladesh on own home soil.
Yousuf in social media posted, “I announce my resignation as a selector for the Pakistan cricket team due to personal reasons. Serving this incredible team has been a profound privilege, and I am proud to have contributed to the growth and success of Pakistan Cricket.”
He’ll be parting ways with the struggling Pakistan team ahead of upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025 . His last assignment was therefore the home Test Series against England.
Yousuf also stated that he has extreme faith on the talents of Pakistan Cricket.
He wrote, “I have immense faith in the talent and spirit of our players, and wish our team all the best as they continue to strive for greatness.”
Pakistan Cricket has seen immense downfall since 2022. Although Yousuf’s time as selector isn’t as memorable as his international career, the story didn’t begin here.
Pakistan failed miserably in Asia Cup 2022, ICC ODI World Cup 2023 and ICC T20 World Cup 2024 & also the Bilateral Series.
Yousuf himself took over from Wahab Riaz who was demoted from Chief Selector.
The successor of Yousuf will be the 8th candidate in the post in last 3 years. Pakistan Cricket will look to turn things around from the next series against England and eye to defend Champions Trophy Crown in 2025.
