Mithali Raj surpasses Charlotte Edwards to become highest run-getter in women’s cricket

Worcester: India ODI skipper Mithali Raj surpassed England’s Charlotte Edwards as the highest scorer in women’s international cricket across formats on Saturday. The right-hander reached the milestone when on 14 not out out against England in the final and third ODI which India won by four wickets.

Chasing England women’s 219 all out, the talismanic India batter surpassed the milestone with a boundary down the ground off Natalie Sciver in the 23rd over. She remained unbeaten on 75 helping India women register their first win on the tour. England won the the ODI series 2-1

Raj, 38, went past former England skipper Edwards’ tally of 10,273 runs — in a career from 1996 to 2016. On the other hand, Mithali, who hails from Hyderabad made her debut in international cricket in 1999 against Ireland. Mithali’s cuurent tally is 10,337 runs.

She has also played the most ODIs (215) and her 7304 runs in the 50-over format is also highest in the world. Earlier this week, Mithali also completed an inspiring 22 years in international cricket.

What makes it more unique is that no other women cricketer has been active in international cricket for as long as 22 years. When compared to men’s cricket, only the legendary Sachin Tendulkar has a longer career than Mithali Raj across men’s and women’s cricket with 22 years 91 days.
