Manisha Kalyan makes UEFA Women’s Champions League debut, makes India proud

Kolkata: Manisha Kalyan writes record for Indian women’s football. Thr Blue Tigresses’ prodigy became the first Indian to make an appearance in the UEFA Women’s Champions League.

She made her debut for Cypriot international Marilena Georgiou in the 60th minute at the Makareio Stadium. The , Apollon Ladies thrash SFK Rīga 3-0 with a powerful display in their UWCL opener.

The 20 year-old put pen to paper on a multi-year contract with Cypriot top division champions Apollon Ladies. The offer came following Kalyan’s heroics with the Indian national team and Gokulam Kerala in the Indian Women’s League (IWL).

Manisha Kalyan completed three successful years with the defending IWL champions Gokulam Kerala FC, before joining the European side. She succeeded Dangmei Grace from Gokulam Kerala FC to sign for an overseas club who joined Uzbek outfit FC Nasaf.

Manisha won two Indian Women’s League with Gokulam Kerala FC and also adjudged as the IWL Player of the League last season. She finished as the second-highest goalscorer in the competition with 14 strikes to her name. Adding to this, , she became the first Indian women’s footballer to score at the continental level after scoring in the AFC Women’s Club Championship for Gokulam Kerala.
