Manchester: Manchester United player Mason Greenwood has been arrested on Sunday on suspicion of rape and assault following allegations of his girlfriend Harriet Robson on social media.

“Greater Manchester Police were made aware earlier today (Sunday 30 January) of online social media images and videos posted by a woman reporting incidents of physical violence. An investigation was launched and following enquiries we can confirm a man in his 20s has since been arrested on suspicion of rape and assault. He remains in custody for questioning. Enquiries are ongoing,” according to the Greater Manchester Police statement.

Greenwood will not play or practise for United while police and the club investigate the circumstances surrounding photographs and an audio recording that circulated on social media on Sunday.

A statement issued by United read: “Mason Greenwood will not return to training or play matches until further notice.”

United had previously stated that they would launch their own investigation before announcing Greenwood’s suspension in a statement released on Sunday morning.

The statement came in reaction to claims made in photographs and audio that have since been removed from a woman’s Instagram account.

However, the 20-year-old footballer did not respond to these allegations. The English footballer made his debut for the club in March 2019, signed a four-year deal in February 2021 after rising up through the ranks of the United academy.
