Madrid: Atletico Madrid scored three past Elche, as they reached the top of the La Liga table at Wanda Metropolitano on Saturday (December 19). Luis Suarez scored a brace and a spot-kick from Diego Costa allowed them to grab three points at home.
Suarez who last scored on November 7, found his scoring ways back as a low cross from Kieran Trippier was hit into the back of the net by him on 41 minutes, hence giving Atletico the lead.
After play resumed in the second half, Suarez completed his brace by receiving a low pass by Yannick Carrasco and hitting it home on 58 minutes. With this, he scored his ninth goal of the season and became the joint top-scorer along with Iago Aspas and Mikel Oyarzabal.
Elche got back in the game with a header from Lucas Boye which was preceded by a well-worked corner on 64 minutes but substitute Costa sealed the points for Atletico by converting a penalty on 80 minutes.
